Saturday: Vergne and Kvyat blocked in Q2 for Toro Rosso
The day was eventful at Toro Rosso between Daniil Kvyat's promotion to Red Bull and the work done on JEV's F1 car. Neither teammate managed to make it out of Q2 in the Japanese Grand Prix qualifying.
Jean-Eric Vergne (No.25) – 8th and 11th [21st on the grid]
Even though he suffered another setback by learning of Daniil Kvyat’s appointment in place of Sebastian Vettel at Red Bull, the Frenchman continues to do his job well. He states: « I am very satisfied with my qualifying today, especially considering how the weekend has gone for me. I didn’t run in FP1, had two technical issues in FP2, and only managed to do three laps in FP3 this morning. However, the team was able to set up the car in time for qualifying, and I was able to do my job on this difficult Suzuka track… The race is tomorrow, and anything can happen, even starting at the back of the grid. »
A problem forced him to change his combustion engine, resulting in a 10-place grid penalty.
Daniil Kvyat (No. 26) – 9th and 13th [12th on the grid]
The young Russian was thrilled with his appointment at Red Bull: « It was a very special Saturday here in Japan today, as I was told I will be driving for Infiniti Red Bull Racing next year. It’s a fantastic feeling and a great opportunity and an honor for me, so I want to thank Red Bull for trusting me. »
His qualifying session was, however, less impressive: « Today the qualification, I am satisfied with the overall performance, but we could have done better. Q1 was good, but in Q2, my last flying lap was disrupted by a few slower cars in front of me. When I reached turn 1, my tires were not warm enough, and the lap was compromised, as being in the rhythm is very important here. Despite everything, I am looking forward to the race, whatever the weather! »
