Caterham sells its GP2 team to Status
Three months after selling his F1 team, Tony Fernandes has also sold his GP2 team to Status Grand Prix.
This is therefore a new step in Tony Fernandes’s disengagement from the automotive industry. He had started by selling his shares in the Alpine joint venture with Renault before selling his F1 team. It remains to be seen if he will also sell his Moto2 team, AirAsia Caterham.
Without F1, the sale of its GP2 team became evident. It was then just a matter of finding the right partner to take over this activity. The choice fell on the GP3 team, Status Grand Prix. The transaction makes sense for both parties as it allows the team to be present in both categories, benefiting from the staff and experience of Caterham Racing.
This is explained by Teddy Yip, the team director: « Status Grand Prix has been part of the GP2 family for five years. As we have won many races in GP2, we have always had the ambition to move up to the higher category when the time was right. The opportunity to take over a team as established and regarded as Caterham Racing has created this moment. »
Starting next season, the team will carry the name and visual identity of Status in both categories, but the two structures will finish their season in their current configuration, including from the drivers’ perspective.
