Brazil GP: Williams could have done better in Q3

Obviously, for Felipe Massa, Interlagos is a special circuit since it is where he started his racing career: « This was a very good qualifying for me, and the reaction and energy of the fans were very special and emotional for me. This track holds a special place in my heart because I was born in Sao Paulo, and I always receive a lot of support there. »

He also hasn’t forgotten that he won his last F1 victory there in 2008. Six years later, the Paulista says he once again has the opportunity to at least get back on the podium, if not better: « There will be many variables tomorrow, especially with the weather that always changes rapidly here. So we must prepare well tonight. I’m starting the race in a very good position and with less pressure than the guys in front. My goal is to get on the podium to celebrate with my fans. »

Regarding Valtteri Bottas, he succumbed to his teammate’s pace and therefore finished 4th: « The car improved throughout the weekend as rubber was laid down. We were very competitive today and were quite close to the Mercedes. I made a few mistakes in Q3. I probably lost a tenth there, which can make a big difference since the lap is so short. In the end, it’s still a good position, and we have to be happy to have secured the second row once again. »

For Rob Smedley, Williams’ performance director, both drivers are therefore in a good position to secure the team’s place in the constructors’ championship: « The race is likely to be very unpredictable, with the weather playing an important role since rain is probable. We must therefore ensure that we do everything right. The goal hasn’t changed: we want to finish third in the championship, and tomorrow is a good opportunity to solidify this position. »

Indeed, this third place translates into the possibility of accessing the financial bonus provided by the FOM for the top 3 constructors. For an independent team like Williams, this kind of resource is crucial to enhance the investments made to raise the team’s performance level.
