Official: Gary Paffett leaves McLaren to join the Mercedes team

Gary Paffett’s role within the McLaren team wasn’t the most visible as he was primarily dedicated to development in the simulator. However, his contribution to the engineers’ work was not negligible since it’s a tool that has become indispensable nowadays: « I loved working for McLaren and I hope that my experience feedback over these years has been beneficial. The engineers I worked with have been kind enough to say that it has been. I have many friends at McLaren and I wish them the best for the future. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for one or two McLaren victories next year. »

He cannot, in fact, allow himself to wish too much for McLaren’s future success because, if he decided to leave the team, it is to protect his association with Mercedes. It is the latter that ensures his competition program as he is engaged in DTM with HWA Euronics, which is the star brand’s armed wing in the German championship.

But this should not be the only driver change coming within the team led by Eric Boullier, as Fernando Alonso’s arrival seems more and more certain. The question remains whether Jenson Button’s experience will be enough against Kevin Magnussen’s youth.
