Steve Nielsen becomes the new sporting director of Williams

The British engineer is one of the most experienced on the circuit, having been active in F1 for 27 years. His list of employers is therefore impressive: he was team director at Tyrrell, Honda, Arrows, and then sporting director at Benetton/Renault, Caterham, and consequently Toro Rosso.

His last two positions were not of very long terms since he only completed one season with Caterham and he only spent two seasons in Faenza. His goal now is to help Williams do even better than third in the Constructors’ Championship: « I am delighted to join a team with a history and stature like Williams at a very exciting time for everyone at Grove, after a very impressive season. In this role, I will be able to contribute to ensuring that our track operations remain at the highest levels and that we maximize our on-track performance. »

He will therefore serve under the orders of Pat Symonds, the chief architect of the revival of the team led by Claire Williams. Symonds is currently recruiting key men with a lot of experience to enable his team to aim even higher. Indeed, on some occasions this season, Williams has appeared somewhat fragile in breaking through the final barrier and being able to join the list of winners: Steve brings extensive experience in sports management in Formula One and will help us as a team as we seek to progress further in the championship standings. He has already won world titles in the past and knows what needs to be done from a sporting point of view for Williams to do it again. We have a talented racing team that continues to improve. With Steve, we are well-positioned to make further operational progress next season.
