Williams will benefit from the British Telecom network
After an initial trial at the end of the season, Williams and BT have decided to commit for several years to optimize the transmission of data generated by the team using the telecom operator's network.
Last season, Williams missed out on a possible victory due to a lack of confidence. The team’s management were the first to acknowledge that the entire organization was not set up to handle situations where a win was within reach.
One of the solutions to overcome this last step is to strengthen its information system in order to be able to establish a strategy in a very short time. This is the whole point of the trial conducted with British Telecom at the end of the season. With a more efficient network, Claire Williams’ team benefited from greater strategic capabilities, faster video analysis of pit stop trials and races, as well as improved performance and reliability of data processing.
Convinced of the merits of such an approach, the leaders of Williams have decided to take the plunge and have committed to several years with BT, as explained by Pat Symonds, the team’s technical director: « A significantly improved network speed can completely change the way we work. The benefits to our routine operations are obvious and are highlighted by a huge increase in our analytical capabilities away from the track. A less obvious gain is the ability to access crucial information sources faster, no matter where we are. For example, we can remotely query our computer-aided design system located at our headquarters, build new sets, and export the necessary information to the track in just a few minutes. »
For BT, the direct media impact will be limited since its logo will be placed on the headrest of Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas’ single-seaters. However, the advantage will mainly be to showcase its technology and expertise in a highly competitive environment, like F1. Additionally, the operator will benefit from B-to-B relationship opportunities that are established in the paddock.
