Barcelona extends until 2019
Barcelona has managed to reach an agreement with Bernie Ecclestone to extend its presence on the calendar. It is now guaranteed until 2019.
The concerns that arose during the economic crisis seem to have dissipated for the Catalan city, as the circuit’s leaders have secured their future a year before the end of their current contract.
Such an extension comes just a few weeks after some media reported new negotiations with investors to bring F1 back to Valencia, which had abandoned its event due to the deterioration of local finances. Since Baku has obtained the title of European Grand Prix starting from the next season, the only hope for the port city was to secure the Spanish Grand Prix. The new agreement for Barcelona thus puts an end to this possibility.
Vicenç Aguilera, the president of the circuit, stated: “We are extremely proud to announce this extension during such a special year, marking the 25th anniversary of the Formula 1 Grand Prix at the Barcelona circuit. We will therefore extend our fruitful relationship with Formula One and look forward to the next 25 years.”
F1 indeed settled in Barcelona in 1991, as part of the city’s preparations to host the 1992 Olympic Games. This event marked the renewal of a city that had been declining for several decades.
