Zero tolerance for track limits at Silverstone
The FIA has informed the drivers that they will be closely monitored regarding track limits during the qualifying session of the Silverstone Grand Prix.
During the drivers’ briefing, there was much discussion about the track limits and adherence to them. Indeed, some drivers believed that their rivals were deliberately going slightly beyond the famous white line to gain an advantage. Toro Rosso drivers, Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz, were thus in the spotlight.
This was notably the case in turn number 9. This turn used to be the first turn before the start line was moved to its current location.
The warning from the stewards is therefore unequivocal: unless there was an external reason for veering off at this spot, any time achieved by crossing the white line will be canceled during the qualifying session. The monitoring will not stop at this session and will be extended to the race. During the race, if a driver gains a clear advantage, they will be subject to an investigation by the stewards, who may then decide to impose a penalty.
To demonstrate the seriousness of this monitoring, every crossing of the famous line during the last practice session was meticulously displayed on the track action monitoring screen.
