Kevin Magnussen wants a seat at all costs for next season
In early 2015, Kevin Magnussen was disappointed to have been sidelined from his seat in favor of Fernando Alonso. Thus, he made it known that he would not accept not racing the following year.
After Alonso’s arrival, Kevin Magnussen, who had a rather modest 2014 season [he scored 55 points and his teammate Button 126], is now relegated to a more subordinate role: that of a reserve driver. This year, he made a brief appearance at the Australian Grand Prix, replacing Alonso, who was unavailable following his private testing accident in Barcelona. Classified in 18th place, he couldn’t complete a single lap on Sunday. He recently spoke about the possibility of spending a season without being a main driver: *« There won’t be another year without me driving. It’s out of the question. »* he assured. *« I’m not saying I won’t be a third driver, but if I don’t have a seat, I could do something else on the side. But I don’t hope for that; I wish to return to F1 next year. »*
The return of the Dane is indeed not impossible. Indeed, Jenson Button’s place is still uncertain, as McLaren would need to activate a contract option to retain the 2009 world champion for next year. If Button steps down, Magnussen could very well replace the Briton, but he would also face competition from Stoffel Vandoorne, who is currently leading the GP2 championship and is also within the McLaren fold.
As a last resort, if Magnussen is not on the F1 tracks, he assures that he is considering IndyCar, a discipline he should have joined this year before being “forced” to replace Alonso. *I have always liked IndyCar, there’s something cool about it. I like the “old-school” driving.*
