Mercedes ahead despite a major scare for Nico Rosberg
If the two Mercedes drivers finished ahead in both Friday sessions, a tire on Nico Rosberg's car exploded at full speed, without consequences for the German driver.
This is certainly the most impressive image of the day: Nico Rosberg’s right rear tire exploded in the Blanchimont corner, but the German managed to avoid hitting the safety barriers and emerged unscathed.
He thus declares himself very lucky to have had more fear than harm: « During the second session, it was shocking for me when my rear tire exploded. When you are going at 300 km/h and something goes wrong, it’s a horrible feeling. I thought I was going to end up in the wall. Honestly, it’s pure luck that I didn’t. We now need to analyze what happened with Pirelli. »
For Lewis Hamilton, the day was much less eventful, even though he had to give way twice to his teammate: « Today was a good day: no problems with the car, great weather, and lots of fun on the track. It’s not often that it stays dry, and it enhances the pleasure of going through great corners like Eau Rouge. It was great to be back. »
