The FIA confirms a 21-race calendar in 2016
The FIA has finally released its final version of the 2016 calendar. The only change compared to the previous version is that Mexico is once again paired with the United States and no longer with Brazil.
The FIA World Council is the opportunity to definitively approve the calendar for the following season. The 2015 edition was no exception. It is clear that there are few differences compared to the previous version. The institution at Place de la Concorde has decided not to pair the races in Mexico and Brazil, but rather Mexico City with Austin, which makes much more sense from a logistical standpoint.
On the other hand, the Austin event is now threatened with being removed from the calendar. The FIA simply notes that an agreement must be reached with the commercial rights holder and the local federation. The reason for such a threat is the decision by the State of Texas to significantly reduce its public subsidy for the event, which calls into question its financial balance.
Furthermore, it has been decided to maintain the back-to-back between Canada and Azerbaijan, which will therefore take place the same weekend as the 24 Hours of Le Mans. However, such a decision is less detrimental for Nico Hülkenberg, the defending champion, since Porsche announced that only two cars would participate in the event due to cost-cutting measures required by the Volkswagen scandal.
