Pirelli summons F1 officials for 2017
In order to best prepare for the 2017 regulatory change, Pirelli asked all F1 decision-makers to meet to define the development areas for its future tires.
In recent years, F1 has been searching for the magic formula that would revive the spectacle and suspense on the track. The new regulations scheduled for next year aim to significantly reduce the impact of aerodynamics in order to highlight other elements and also to once again increase lap times.
Nonetheless, Pirelli had already made it known that it was imperative for the teams to communicate their research work in advance to establish the physical constraints that will be applied to its tires. This will allow them to define the structure of their tires, which is why they want to convene the various stakeholders. « A meeting will be held next week at Pirelli’s headquarters in Milan, where the main Formula 1 officials will participate. The meeting aims to discuss the performance requirements of the tires in light of the 2017 regulations. »
At the heart of the discussion, Pirelli also intends to bring the issue of on-track testing back to the table. This has been a recurring theme since the manufacturer’s arrival, which has been the subject of much controversy, particularly due to the repeated tire blowouts.
The Italian company has therefore clearly expressed that it wants more tests during the season: « In 2017, the technical aspects will become even more complex. Pirelli is therefore even more convinced of the need to conduct more on-track tests. This is a factor that has been extremely limited in recent years, despite the significant evolution of cars and the significant increase in their performance. »
We can observe that Pirelli’s voice has been listened to more lately, particularly with the fact that wet track tests were organized this week at the Paul Ricard circuit. They were requested after the catastrophic weather that prevented the cars from running for a good part of the Austin weekend.
