Gerhard Gribkowsky to be released from prison
Initially sentenced in 2012 to eight and a half years in prison for corruption, Gerhard Gribkowsky will finally be released next month.
The Munich trial shook the Formula 1 world for many months, where Bernie Ecclestone’s future was then under threat. Indeed, the Bavarian prosecutor sought to both convict Gehrard Gribkowsky for being corrupt and Bernie Ecclestone for making the infamous $44 million payment.
The British man’s defense was that he only made the payment under duress from the German banker, who was threatening to provide incriminating documents to the British tax authorities. The F1 chief financier positioned himself as a victim of blackmail rather than as a briber so that Gehrard Gribkowsky would not favor the sale by BayernLB of its F1 shares to a buyer that suited Bernie Ecclestone. Ultimately, Bernie Ecclestone sealed an agreement with the German justice system by agreeing to make a payment of 100 million euros.
For Gehrard Gribkowsky, the punishment enforcement chamber has decided to release him as of March 3rd. Nevertheless, the former banker has already begun his reintegration process into civil society as he is already working for an Austrian construction company but is required to return to prison in the evenings and on weekends.
