Stoffel Vandoorne will be present in Super Formula
After several months of negotiations, Stoffel Vandoorne has secured his spot in the Japanese Super Formula, allowing him to maintain a competitive program alongside his reserve position at McLaren.
The GP2 champion did not intend to face the same fate as Kevin Magnussen, who had no racing program last year when he returned to being a reserve at McLaren, before being released by the team at the end of the season.
After having largely dominated the GP2 championship, the Belgian had to find another championship to keep up with the competition’s rhythm. This is now done with Super Formula, where Honda is widely present. That’s why he is joining a team backed by the Japanese engine manufacturer, Dandelion Racing, for which he had conducted tests last November.
Nevertheless, this program will make him miss two F1 weekends, Monaco and Mexico, and will push him to make numerous trips back and forth between Europe and Japan, not to mention all the trips scheduled for the F1 calendar as well as commitments with various McLaren sponsors.
But it is a sacrifice that he is undoubtedly willing to make in order to secure a starting position in F1 with McLaren in 2017.
