Official: Qualifications once again in the Melbourne format for Bahrain
F1 ridicules itself once again: after rushing to announce the 2015 format for qualifying on Sunday morning, it's ultimately the much-criticized Melbourne system that will be used in Bahrain.
The day after the open letter from the drivers to the leaders to denounce obsolete governance, Formula 1 once again shows that it is ungovernable. The team leaders wanted the Bahrain qualifications to be under the Q1, Q2, and Q3 format again, as last year, to avoid a repeat of the Melbourne Q3 fiasco where all the drivers returned to the pits seven minutes before the end of the session. Sebastian Vettel chose to highlight the absurdity of the situation by attending the press conference already in his civilian clothes and not in his racing suit.
But the FIA, through its president, did not submit this formula to the vote of the F1 Commission, which was held today. It has, in fact, proposed a hybrid system: keeping the elimination system (the one from Melbourne) in Q1 and Q2 but returning to last year’s Q3 format.
However, this proposal did not receive the unanimous votes from the teams necessary to adopt such a change. Under these conditions, the regulations remain as last voted, namely the elimination format seen in Melbourne!
One can only think that such an outcome is deliberately chosen by the various stakeholders to advance their own agenda and interests by damaging the image of the other side. But in this game, the entire sport reveals its weakness and becomes the subject of mockery. In these conditions, it seems difficult to attract new manufacturers and/or sponsors…
