The two Manors avoid problems in Monaco

A race in rainy Monaco can create great opportunities for small teams. This was not the case for Manor this year, even though both drivers managed to reach the finish.

The two Manors avoid problems in Monaco

Manor is well-positioned to know that Monaco can create miracles. But ultimately 2016 is not 2014, and the team’s situation remains the same after the Monaco race as it was before. Indeed, Pascal Wehrlein’s 14th place finish is not enough to surpass Marcus Ericsson’s 12th place in Spain and Bahrain.

The young German could have equaled his best performance, a 13th place, not counting the 20-second penalty he received for ignoring blue flags and speeding under the virtual safety car.

He is nevertheless satisfied that his strategy allowed him to gain many positions compared to his starting grid position: « At the beginning of the race, with the track still wet, we decided to stay on full wets and run longer. With the other cars pitting earlier to switch to intermediates, we had a good position on the track. When we pitted, we were able to pass several cars. The strategy worked perfectly. We managed to keep the Haas behind us until the checkered flag, even though penalties put us back behind them. »

He finished just ahead of his teammate, Rio Haryanto, who struggled towards the end of the race: « Obviously, the first part was tricky for everyone in the wet, but actually, once the race started, I was able to keep the pace: the first two stints were good for me. But towards the end, there was a lot of traffic and with the blue flags, I struggled to keep the temperature in my tires. So I was losing time per lap. »
