Force India has no plan B to replace Sergio Perez
Now fourth in the Constructors' Championship, Sahara Force India intends to keep its two drivers for next season, even if discussions with Sergio Perez are protracted.
Spa-Francorchamps will remain in the annals of Sahara Force India since both drivers were able to finish 4th and 5th as they managed to take advantage of Ferrari and Red Bull’s misfortunes. Bob Fernley, the team’s director, thus reflected on this weekend exclusively for MotorsInside: « We were comfortable finishing 6th or 7th. Ferrari’s problems allowed us to move ahead. That’s what really made the difference. We were able to seize the opportunity that presented itself. »
These 22 points prove to be precious as they allow them to overtake Williams in the championship and reach fourth position, marking the team’s best ranking in history: « It’s very important because, when you are a competitor, you always seek to progress. Over the past few years, we have gradually climbed upwards. We are capable of finishing fourth. »
Nevertheless, Vijay Mallya’s right-hand man knows perfectly well that Williams will not give up and that the fight will be intense until the end of the season: « It will not be easy because the higher you are, the harder it becomes. Williams is a very good team. Over the course of the season, it’s a good thing that we’ve managed to make up our deficit. But now, whether we have a lead of two points or none, it is almost the same.»
But if the battle between the two teams is expected to be very close, it will take place with the current equipment since the development of the 2016 single-seater has already been halted in favor of next season’s car. Moreover, the outcome of this duel will have no impact on discussions with Sergio Perez, who seems to be trying to join Renault as the number 1 driver: « This is a separate discussion. We have a contract with both drivers for next year. Sergio has an additional element because of the commercial dimension with his sponsors and our partners. We are currently in this phase, discussing the commercial aspect. It takes time because everyone wants the best deal. »
The situation is therefore clear from the team’s perspective: « At the moment, for us, it will be Nico and Checo and that’s it. If that should fall apart for any reason, which would surprise me a lot, then we would react. We don’t have a plan B. It would be very inappropriate for us to negotiate with another driver while we have a contract in place. »
But the leader knows very well that things move quickly in F1. Furthermore, with a competitive package, he knows he can attract interest. Especially since, having the Mercedes engine, he would be able to offer a seat to one of the protégés of his engine supplier, whether it be Pascal Wehrlein or Esteban Ocon. This solution would have the advantage of significantly reducing his expenses in this area. The current situation of the team is therefore most comfortable.
