Haas and Romain Grosjean in trouble in Mexico City
After a very complicated qualifying session, Haas and Romain Grosjean had a catastrophic race, as the Frenchman and Esteban Gutierrez were only able to get ahead of Esteban Ocon, finishing 19th and 20th.
Haas tried everything to provide a car that satisfies Romain Grosjean. Already condemned to the last row after the slowest qualifying time, the Frenchman’s mechanics changed the floor of his car to see if it would improve the balance of his single-seater. Romain Grosjean thus found himself forced to start from the pit lane.
He nevertheless benefited from the initial safety car to make up for his delay against his competitors. However, the behavior of his car did not improve, to the point that he no longer even knew what to expect at each turn! He could only lament the current situation: « We tried to change some parts to analyze what was wrong, but we didn’t really find the problem. The car was nowhere today. It was difficult to maneuver and drive. We didn’t do anything right. We had a lot of instability, with a lot of oversteer and understeer. I never knew what was going to happen. The car veered left when I braked. It felt really strange. »
The situation isn’t any better on the other side of the garage since Esteban Gutierrez was once again a victim of brake problems due to the lack of cooling related to low atmospheric pressure: « We attacked all the time, pushed beyond the limits of the car we had. I had to be careful with my brakes because we were having trouble cooling them. So, I had to brake much earlier than I would have liked. It wasn’t ideal for trying to climb up but it was the only thing to do to finish the race. »
This was certainly not what he hoped for his first home race. While this feeling will remain etched in his memory, he will want to quickly turn the page after a very challenging weekend.
