Giovinazzi replaces Wehrlein at Sauber in China

This time, Pascal Wehrlein did not keep the suspense: while he had taken the wheel during the Friday session in Melbourne to test his physical condition, this will not be the case this week in China.

The German has already stated that he is not in a position to handle the physical demands of driving an F1: « For me, the most important thing is that I can train intensively to ensure that I will be at 100% as quickly as possible. I will then be well prepared for my first full Grand Prix weekend with Sauber. »

But there is now a sense of increased caution among the various stakeholders regarding the return of the German driver. In Melbourne, Monisha Kaltenborn had stated that she had no doubt that her regular driver would regain his place by the time of the Chinese race. This time, the driver himself acknowledges that the next step, in Bahrain, is already next week and that he is not yet certain of participating: « Let’s hope it will be in Bahrain. If not, we will take the necessary time until Russia to ensure that I am completely ready. »

Once again, it will be Antonio Giovinazzi who takes the wheel for the Chinese event. The GP2 vice-champion is thrilled with the opportunity given to him, especially after delivering a strong performance on the atypical Melbourne track. With a more orthodox preparation for a traditional circuit, the young Italian will have the opportunity to showcase his talent once again.

To the point that Sauber asks its engine supplier, Ferrari, which supports them, to keep him beyond the current interim? And thus potentially deliver a fatal blow to the career of Pascal Wehrlein, despite Mercedes’ support?
