Jenson Button to return to McLaren in Monaco
A second retiree will be making an early comeback: it's Jenson Button who will replace Fernando Alonso at the Monaco Grand Prix.
If Felipe Massa holds the record for the shortest retirement, having missed no races between his retirement and his return to Williams, Jenson Button will be well positioned in this ranking.
Indeed, the Briton will make his return to competition at the Monaco Grand Prix, replacing Fernando Alonso, who will be competing in the Indianapolis 500 miles on the same day. The words spoken by Ron Dennis at Spa-Francorchamps during the announcement of Jenson Button’s departure thus become prophetic: He will also be in a position to race for us if circumstances require it.
These circumstances have now come together since McLaren was looking for a driver, and it makes sense for them to call upon the one who is officially their reserve driver. He is thrilled to be able to drive again on a track that has favored him, with a victory in 2009: “I can’t wait to face the unique challenge that is the Monaco Grand Prix. I will drive the MCL32 in Monaco on the McLaren simulator before going there. I will then be ready to race.”
Physical fitness is not an issue for the newly retired since he has not stopped his physical training, and has even increased it: I am in extremely good physical condition because I have done a lot of triathlon training recently. I have no apprehension about that.
It will, therefore, be a great opportunity to reunite with all his friends from the paddock in the most prestigious setting of the year.
