Vandoorne: We’re trying to do the best we can with what we’ve got
Stoffel Vandoorne had a trouble-free first day, setting the 13th fastest time this afternoon, less than two seconds off Lewis Hamilton's best time. No cause for ecstasy, but a good start to the weekend that will give us confidence going into qualifying.
After a first trouble-free day in his single-seater, Stoffel Vandoorne was quite confident by the end of the afternoon. Less than two seconds off Lewis Hamilton’s best time in FP2, the Belgian is in a position to aim for at least Q2 tomorrow during qualifying.
But if the objective is real, Vandoorne, although confident, remains very cautious about the outcome of his qualifications and his ability to move to Q2: « The gaps are very tight. It’s still too early to tell. We will try to make the most of our car by building on what happened today, and I hope that tomorrow we can make another small step forward. »
Like many other teams, McLaren has brought its share of aerodynamic developments for this first race on European soil. Developments that seem to have worked well today: « We’ve brought quite a few chassis developments this weekend. Tonight, we’ll have a lot of analysis to do to make them work as we want, hoping that tomorrow will be even better. » the Belgian further specifies.
His teammate, Fernando Alonso, was less fortunate than him today. A bit fatalistic, Vandoorne tries, as best as he can, to reassure himself: “We’re trying to do the best we can with what we have,” he concludes.
