Kimi Räikkönen confirmed by Ferrari for 2018
Ferrari has decided to keep Kimi Räikkönen for an additional season. This should satisfy Sebastian Vettel, whose contract also expires at the end of the year.
Ferrari is reputed to be very conservative in its choice of drivers, very rarely opting to bring in a young driver and focusing more on experience.
However, this year, some were hoping that this policy would evolve as Scuderia has a gem in its young driver program, with the presence of Charles Leclerc. The Monegasque is overwhelmingly dominating the F2 championship and the question is rather at which event he will clinch the title.
But ultimately, the Scuderia decided to maintain a policy that proved its worth during the Schumacher era. There are many reasons for Kimi Räikkönen, starting with the fact that the driver has not disappointed behind the wheel since he has climbed onto the podium four times since the beginning of the season.
But above all, the Finn presents a major advantage for Ferrari by being very close to Sebastian Vettel. Furthermore, he has accepted his clear status as the number 2 driver, as the races in Monaco and Budapest have clearly proven.
Ferrari is urgently seeking to extend the contract of its star driver, which expires at the end of the year. Before the start of the season, Sergio Marchionne, the CEO of Ferrari, made it clear that the team must first provide him with a car capable of winning. It must be acknowledged that the team’s part has been fulfilled since the German is sitting at the top of the championship. Additionally, few other seats are currently available, which limits the alternatives for Sebastian Vettel.
Now it remains to be seen when the announcement of Sebastian Vettel’s contract extension will be made official. With the Monza Grand Prix taking place next week, we can imagine it shouldn’t be too long…
