Fernando Alonso will race in Austin with his Indianapolis helmet
McLaren driver Fernando Alonso will participate in the United States Grand Prix this weekend with a helmet featuring the theme and colors of the one he used this year in the legendary Indianapolis 500.
During the upcoming United States Grand Prix taking place this weekend in Austin, Fernando Alonso will make a playful nod to his participation in this year’s Indianapolis 500.
Indeed, the Spanish driver will revert to the design of his helmet used at the American oval for the entire weekend in Austin. Only the number 14, the one assigned to him in Formula 1, will replace the 29 from Indianapolis. His pair of boots will also adopt these colors.
Last May, Alonso skipped the Monaco Grand Prix to participate in the legendary American race, hoping to one day achieve the Triple Crown, which is reserved for the winners of the 500 Miles, the Monaco Grand Prix, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. To date, only Graham Hill holds this record. However, the driver who is closest to achieving it is Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya, who only needs a win at Le Mans to complete his achievements.
