Lewis Hamilton can be champion as early as Austin if
Lewis Hamilton is the only one of the three drivers still in contention for the world championship title who can be crowned at the next Grand Prix in the United States. However, this probability will depend as much on his result as on those of Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas.
The two Mercedes drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, and the Ferrari driver, Sebastian Vettel, are the only remaining drivers on the grid who can still contend for the world champion title this year.
The chances of the Finn are, however, minimal. With a 72-point deficit to the current leader Hamilton, Bottas will need to secure victory on Sunday while counting on a very unfavorable result for his teammate to hope to keep his chances alive for the last three races of the season.
In the meantime, in Austin this weekend, only Lewis Hamilton can claim the title. For that, it would require:
– Hamilton gagne et que Vettel ne termine pas mieux que 6ème, le classement de Bottas n’étant pas important ;
– Hamilton finisse 2ème, que Vettel ne termine pas mieux que 9ème et que Bottas ne gagne pas.
Lewis Hamilton must therefore finish the race in the top two positions to be able to claim the title; otherwise, the decision will be postponed at least until the Mexican Grand Prix.
