Toro Rosso fields Brendon Hartley and Pierre Gasly in Mexico
Brendon Hartley will get a second chance, being retained by Toro Rosso in Mexico. He will be supported by Pierre Gasly, who won't have been able to defend his chances in Super Formula.
Pierre Gasly can smile again: after missing the Austin weekend to participate in the finale of the Japanese Super Formula championship, it was canceled due to a typhoon on the Japanese archipelago. As a precaution, it was decided not to hold the last two races, which deprived the Frenchman of the opportunity to make up his 0.5 point deficit in the championship.
But this disappointment will soon be forgotten as he will be back behind the wheel of a Toro Rosso as early as next weekend in Mexico. He will have a new teammate since Daniil Kvyat’s return has been short-lived. Indeed, the Russian has to give up his seat to Brendon Hartley, who was impressive in Austin.
The irony is that the Russian will have lost his seat at Red Bull just two races after a podium in China, while he must certainly say goodbye to F1 after scoring a valuable point in the Constructors’ Championship.
In the Mexican capital, Toro Rosso will return to its role as a training team since the total number of F1 starts for its two drivers will only reach three. If the two drivers prove to be convincing, it is far from being excluded that they will be retained next year.
