Ferrari recruits Daniil Kvyat
Once again, a former Toro Rosso driver keeps a foot in the paddock by becoming Ferrari's development driver. Thus, Daniil Kvyat, dropped by Red Bull during last season, has just signed in Maranello.
At the end of the 2014 season, Jean-Eric Vergne had to leave his seat at Toro Rosso in favor of Max Verstappen. Ferrari then welcomed him for two full seasons.
Three years later, the same scenario is repeating itself as Daniil Kvyat is set to become a development driver for Ferrari after having to leave the Red Bull driver pool last season in favor of French driver Pierre Gasly.
This can be seen as an intelligent maneuver by Scuderia, securing the services of an experienced driver who is especially knowledgeable about the workings of two rival teams, Red Bull and Toro Rosso. He will also be able to share his knowledge about the Renault engine. We can therefore expect him to spend long hours at the wheel of the Reds’ simulator.
If Esteban Gutierrez had been able to return to competition with Haas after being a reserve driver for Ferrari, this was not the case for Jean-Eric Vergne, who therefore left at the end of 2016 to focus on Formula E. It remains to be seen which path the Russian will take as Kimi Räikkönen is likely to experience his last season in F1.
