Fernando Alonso would be ready to make a return to F1, even though he seems to indicate that it could happen rather for the 2021 season.

Alonso tempted by a return in 2021

Present in the F1 paddock this weekend as a McLaren ambassador, Fernando Alonso takes the opportunity to talk about his future projects.

Indeed, he mentioned his future projects with McLaren and Zak Brown, notably for the Indy 500 in 2020. While participation in the Dakar 2020 with Toyota is highly likely given his intensive testing, the Spanish driver has not yet closed his chapter with F1.

Even if things seem pretty closed for him for 2020, he does not rule out a return in 2021 if the new regulations suit him. Regulations that are presented to us as revolutionary for the show on the track.

« I need to find different challenges from Formula 1, challenges that are not yet completed like my desire to win the Indy 500. In 2021, with the new regulations planned for F1, I think it’s a good mix and we could see a different Formula 1 from the one we currently see. » explains Fernando Alonso on Autosport.

I think the reasons why I left Formula 1 are still present, a clear domination by one team and races that are too predictable. But in 2021, that might change and present a good opportunity.

« Any other motorsport is a bit more unpredictable than Formula 1; MotoGP is more unpredictable, Indycar is more unpredictable. »

« The only bad thing is the schedule: 22 races is quite demanding and I’m getting older. »

Even if it is not certain that Fernando Alonso will make a comeback in 2021, his desire to race is indeed present.
