Günther Steiner: Racing Point should think before speaking

Still under its former name Force India, Racing Point had strongly criticized the American team’s strategy of adopting some of the technical characteristics of the Ferrari.

However, the wind has changed since and Racing Point has decided to build its car using the same concept as the Mercedes W09. This has not gone unnoticed and Haas team director, Günther Steiner, has decided to comment on this change:

« Sometimes you need to think before speaking, because maybe one day it will be your turn, and you won’t be able to oppose it. As we all know, they complained quite strongly a few years ago, so what goes around comes around » he adds. « It concerns them. I really don’t care! »

Despite this, Steiner emphasized, however, that he had no problem with Racing Point’s decision.

« I would say this: they use a lot of Mercedes parts on their car, so why would they copy a Red Bull? It’s the same thing with us. We buy a lot of Ferrari parts. So, which car are we going to copy? A Ferrari, obviously. It would be stupid to copy a Toro Rosso or a Red Bull because in that case, we would be trying to invent something that doesn’t exist. So I think they are just doing what we do: trying to make the most out of it and use the right model. »

AlphaTauri Team Principal, Franz Tost, stated that he was not surprised to see a resemblance between the Racing Point and Mercedes cars because they share the same suspension design and gearbox.

« As we know, there is a cooperation between Racing Point and Mercedes » explained Tost.

« They have the rear suspension. I don’t know to what extent they share information about the front suspension and everything related to aerodynamics, but it is on the list of items they can share. But I accept… or let me put it this way, I see that Racing Point has gone in the same direction as Mercedes in terms of development, and they have found similar solutions. However, everything is in order. »
