Tuscan Grand Prix – Free Practice 2: Bottas leads, Vettel and Norris make mistakes

The Mercedes accelerated the pace during this session, Lewis Hamilton finished second, two-tenths behind his teammate. Max Verstappen completes the podium with a time of 1’17″235.

The session was marked by two red flags. The first one followed an off-track excursion by Lando Norris, who was testing the track limits and placed one of the rear wheels behind the curb, resulting in a major off-track incident ending deep in the gravel trap.

The Mugello track is ruthless and hardly forgives any mistakes, as there are no asphalt runoff areas like on modern circuits.

The second interruption took place fifteen minutes before the end of the session, after Sergio Pérez collided with Kimi Räikkönen’s Alfa Romeo.

The Racing Point driver did not respect the blue flag when exiting the pit lane. The incident was noted by the stewards, and both drivers are to be heard in the evening.

On the Haas side, nothing is going well. Romain Grosjean had to spend a good part of the session on the pit wall due to a mechanical problem with his VF-20. The Frenchman seemed to have a battery problem; the team confirmed a few minutes later that it was an electronic issue.

For your information, Grosjean had a new MGU-H and a new turbo installed before the start of the weekend.

Ferrari is still in great difficulty with a single-seater lacking balance on a track where the team expected to regain some speed compared to the last two races.

Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc had trouble stringing together fast laps and both find themselves more than a second behind the Mercedes drivers.

Alex Albon (+0″982), Daniel Ricciardo (+1’050), Esteban Ocon (+1’126), Sergio Perez (+1’209), Pierre Gasly (+1’255), Kimi Räikkönen (+1’396) and Charles Leclerc (+1’411) complete the top ten in this second free practice session of the Tuscan Grand Prix.
