Cyril Abiteboul returns to F1 via Mecachrome

After a promising 2020 season for Renault, which was going to transform into the Alpine team during the off-season, team director Cyril Abiteboul was finally thanked at the end of the 2020 season. Although his results at times or his character may have somewhat harmed the former French Renault F1 Team boss, he was also the image of the team’s progress. Therefore, the announcement of his departure surprised many, as Abiteboul is a rather sentimental character, and one could feel his deep attachment to his team.

However, a new mission awaits Cyril Abiteboul who has thus joined the French company founded in 1937, Mecachrome, as a strategic advisor. This is the company that has been assembling Renault Formula 1 engines for over thirty years now. The engine manufacturer has also commented on the role Cyril Abiteboul will play within their company: « to propose strategic options for the medium-term evolution of the group’s activities in motor racing ».

We are proud that Cyril can bring his support and industry expertise to the group’s teams which, since 1983, have been supporting prestigious brands in the largest categories of motor sports (F1, F2, F3, endurance, rally). The Mecachrome group must understand the trends and opportunities in this sector and align them with the Group’s objectives and the transformation underway in its other businesses, declared Christian Cornille, CEO of Mecachrome.

But that’s not all: the Frenchman is also joining the HCVC investment fund, which would be dedicated to hardtech startups, companies combining hardware, software, and artificial intelligence. His mission within the new investment fund set up by HCVC will be to support and finance the next generation of deeptech entrepreneurs to transform the mobility and automotive sectors.

If innovation is omnipresent in F1, its sole objective is to improve the competitiveness of a team, declares the former boss of the Renault F1 Team.

Joining HCVC is a unique opportunity to continue supporting passionate teams and innovative projects, but this time with the potential to have a wider impact on society. Their focus on deeptech and their vision of the mobility of tomorrow convinced me to bring them my experience and energy.
