Monaco Grand Prix – Unprecedented, Verstappen leading the drivers’ standings

Following the Monaco Grand Prix, Red Bull driver Max Verstappen ultimately won the race this Sunday, ahead of Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris. A very important success for the Dutch driver, especially considering Lewis Hamilton’s seventh place.

For the first time in his career, Verstappen takes the lead in the drivers’ standings!

Asked about what he thought of poleman Charles Leclerc’s abandonment even before the start of the race, the Dutch driver showed empathy: “I was sad for him. It’s his home Grand Prix, he was starting in pole position, you don’t wish that on anyone. After that, we have to focus on our race. We started from the dirty side on the outside, we managed that well.”

Max Verstappen did not let anyone overtake him from his first position in the race after the first corner, which is the most suitable for overtaking. He then managed the race very well, greatly helped by Bottas’s retirement from the race while he was in second place.

To keep the cars behind me was fine. I was super focused on not making any mistakes. I would accelerate the pace as soon as someone tried to close the gap on me. I mostly tried not to wear out my tires as much as the others. I am very happy to have succeeded.

« I was mainly trying to damage my tires less than the others. I am very happy to have succeeded. »

So this is the first time in the young career of the Dutch driver from the Red Bull team that he is leading the drivers’ championship. This is news that does not unsettle Verstappen: « We will see where we will be at the end. It’s a long season. For now, we are doing well but we will see at the end of the season.

After Monaco, discover the new general ranking of drivers and the new general ranking of constructors!
