British Grand Prix – Hamilton delighted the British crowd
The gap narrows at the top of the championship following this British weekend which saw local driver Lewis Hamilton take his 8th victory at Silverstone during the race on Sunday.
Weekend full of events for the seven-time world champion. After setting the fastest time in qualifying to start from first place for the sprint race on Saturday, the Mercedes driver conceded the pole position to Max Verstappen.
Coming back with a vengeance for Sunday’s race, Hamilton was aggressive in the first turns and eventually caused Verstappen to retire following an accident in Copse corner.
Hamilton grateful to the British public
Penalized by 10 seconds in the pit lane after the restart, Hamilton came back on track like a man possessed, overtaking one driver after another until he managed to pass Charles Leclerc, who had been leading for practically the entire race, just 2 laps from the end.
The physically experienced reigning world champion returned to the microphones on his superb race: “I am happy to win a new race here at home, in front of the best fans in the world whom I thank once again for their support. It was really physically challenging today but I am grateful to the fans, my team, and to Valtteri (Bottas) who allowed me to achieve another success here.”
We have managed to find performance in the car
The winner of the Grand Prix then reflected on his accident at the start of the race which caused his rival Max Verstappen to retire: “It’s not the way I wanted to start the race, I tried to be measured to overtake Max at the beginning but he was quite aggressive. I was next to him but he didn’t leave me enough space. In the end, I served the penalty and didn’t give up until the end, I hope the crowd appreciated it.”
Aiming for an 8th record world title, Hamilton believes that nothing is over for the world championship: “I have given everything in recent weeks to find performance on the car, I am proud of how everyone is working in the team and we will fight until the end to catch up with Red Bull.”
After playing “God save the Queen” again for the first time since the Spanish Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton leaves with his 8th victory at the Silverstone circuit but above all only 8 points behind Verstappen before the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2 weeks. The battle promises to be exciting!
