Rain was expected this weekend in Russia and we saw drivers set qualifying times yesterday in the second free practice session. So no one was surprised this morning to see the Sochi circuit very flooded.

Formula 1 has therefore decided to simply cancel the third free practice session. It is very rare for this to happen, and in recent years, even in rainy conditions, the sessions were maintained, especially if the drivers needed to drive in preparation for a rainy Grand Prix as well.
« Having received a request from the race director and in accordance with article 15.3a of the Formula 1 sporting regulations and articles 11.9.3m and 11.9.3o of the FIA sporting code, we have decided – for safety reasons – to cancel the third free practice session. » explains the F1 statement.
« In order to respect the regulations and the time limits requested from each pilot, the session will be considered to have taken place. »
Qualifications are still scheduled for 2 p.m. while the rain is expected to have eased off.
To know that rain is also announced tomorrow during the race.
