Will Sergio Pérez get his wings back?
Sergio Pérez has been struggling in recent Grand Prix. However, the Mexican has no doubts about his current form and intends to return to the front of the pack.
Sergio Pérez’s last podium this season was at the French Grand Prix last June. Worse still, in the last six races, the Red Bull driver, who has won this year, has scored only sixteen points, the same as George Russell in the much less performing Williams. Over the same period, Pérez’s teammate, Max Verstappen, has won two Grand Prix (although the victory in Belgium was somewhat truncated) and scored 57.5 points.
So this is a very fragile balance sheet for a driver who finally seemed to be able to tame the second Red Bull. The worst part for Perez is that his lack of results is not due to any bad luck – like the Hungarian GP where he was one of the victims in the first corner – but, at first glance, to the same lack of speed that cost Pierre Gasly and Alexander Albon their seat before him, whatever the reason.
However, the Mexican does not seem to be affected by this situation at the start of the weekend in Turkey and simply wants to reverse the trend. « I have already been in this position » he explained to Nextgen-Auto. « I will turn the situation around, I have no doubt about it. Every weekend, things can change so I am looking forward to seeing the rest of the year. »
Perez thinks that his recent results do not reflect his current pace. « I think the pace has improved a lot in the last few races. Just need to put everything back together. I fully believe in the team, there is still a long way to go. »
The return to form of the one nicknamed Checo will be essential for Red Bull in the final stretch of the championship. With Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen only separated by two points, the energy drink team will need Perez to score as many points as possible against the current Mercedes champion. Maybe as early as this weekend?
