The FIA gives the green light to the new fireproof gloves in F1

Since Romain Grosjean’s accident at the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix, the FIA has sought to further minimize the risk of burns (and the type of injuries) when a Formula 1 car catches fire. After Romain’s accident, we realized that we could make improvements to the gloves already available and we immediately started working on it, indicated race director Michael Masi, as reported on the Nextgen-Auto website.

Five drivers had the opportunity to try prototypes of these new fireproof gloves during the free practice sessions of the Turkish Grand Prix. The four tested brands, namely Puma, Sparco, Alpinestars, and OMP, were all approved by the drivers. “Everyone was satisfied,” Michael Masi specified. Daniel Ricciardo, who was one of the five test drivers, confirms Masi’s statements. “I didn’t notice any difference with the current gloves, they were very good,” said the McLaren driver.

These gloves will be used in the very near future according to the FIA, perhaps as soon as the end of the 2021 season.
