Romain Grosjean has not yet driven the Mercedes, but it is still “on the table”
After leaving Formula 1 at the end of 2020 following his major accident in Bahrain, Romain Grosjean was offered a farewell test with Mercedes at the French Grand Prix. Cancelled a few weeks earlier, it is still being discussed for the Franco-Swiss driver.
Romain Grosjean had planned to leave Formula 1 at the end of 2020, but not in the way it happened. Victim of a huge accident in Bahrain after just a few turns, the Haas driver miraculously escaped with only a few scratches and serious burns.
Having been unable to take the wheel in the last two races, Mercedes then offered him the opportunity to take the wheel of the Mercedes in 2021 as a well-deserved farewell gift. Planned in the middle of the 2021 season during a show preceding the French Grand Prix, the event had to be canceled a few weeks earlier due to the rescheduling of the French Grand Prix by a week, which no longer aligned with the driver’s schedule.
Postponed indefinitely, without a specific date, Romain Grosjean explained that it was still relevant during a conference for the Indycar, where he now races.
« I sent a message to Toto [editor’s note: Wolff, Mercedes AMG F1 director] after Abu Dhabi, actually long after, after a few weeks had passed, and he replied. He started with “Thank you” and ended with “We need to put you in that car this year,” explained Grosjean.
« It’s still on the table. There are several things that have made organizing this difficult. » he continued.
This year, I couldn’t go to the French Grand Prix because there was a race in Lowa at the same time, but clearly Mercedes is okay with it and so am I, even though my neck will suffer because I’ve lost quite a bit of muscle on that side. You can ask Pato for his opinion on driving an F1.
So yes, it’s still planned and it will happen, but the main goal for me currently is to try to win races with Andretti.
Romain Grosjean is racing for Andretti this season in Indycar after finishing on the podium last year in his first season behind the wheel of a Dale Coyne.
