The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2021, which saw Max Verstappen crowned at the expense of Lewis Hamilton, marked the peak of tensions directed towards Michael Masi, FIA race director for Formula 1 races.
The role of the race director is to enforce the regulations like a referee. Subject to radio calls from team principals, notably Horner for Red Bull or Wolff for Mercedes, Masi had to manage the teams’ comments and their demands as well.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem, recently appointed President of the FIA – International Automobile Federation – thus announced in a conference: “I would like to inform you that changes will take place starting from the Barcelona tests regarding management.”
« Niels Wittich and Eduardo Freitas will take turns in the position of Race Director, assisted by Herbie Blash as senior advisor. Michael Masi, who has done a very challenging job over the past 3 seasons, taking over from Charlie Whiting, will be offered a new position.
