The F1 has just extended by 5 years the contract that linked them to the Grand Prix of the Americas, on the circuit of Austin, Texas. The circuit was officially in its last season in 2021, but it was already known that it would be part of the 2022 calendar.
The F1 has just announced an extension until the 2026 season inclusive. There will thus be two races in the USA, as the Miami Grand Prix is also scheduled during this period.
One of Liberty Media’s goals when acquiring F1 was to reignite Americans’ enthusiasm for the sport. The mission is on track to be a success. Austin experienced its biggest turnout in history in 2021, despite the COVID-19 crisis, with a staggering 400,000 fans in attendance over the three-day race. In comparison, the circuit started with a turnout of 100,000 fans in 2012 for its first F1 event.
« We are very pleased to announce this contract extension. Thanks to the circuit promoter and contracts with Netflix and ESPN, we had an exceptional 2021 season. The city is beautiful and the drivers love this circuit. » commented Stefano Domenicali, CEO of F1.
