After UEFA, FIFA, the IOC, the FIA also announced on Monday that they had requested an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday to make decisions regarding the war in Ukraine and the Russian invasion.
If many federations have chosen to completely cancel the possibility for athletes to participate in competitions, the FIA has given Russian drivers the choice to compete in motorsport under a neutral flag and accepting political neutrality. The Russian F1 Grand Prix 2022 has been cancelled, as well as all international motorsport competitions in Russia.
« As you know, the FIA is following the events in Ukraine with a sad and shocked eye, and I hope for a return to peace. We condemn the Russian invasion in Ukraine, and our thoughts are with those who are suffering from it today. The FIA has already reacted last week to make decisions in F1, F2, WTCR, and Drift competitions. The schedules for these competitions will be revised and approved at our meeting in Bahrain,” explained Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA.
The decisions are as follows:
No sports competitions in Russia
No international competition will be allowed on Russian or Belarusian territory. Therefore, the Russian Grand Prix of F1 is canceled due to force majeure.
No Russian team in FIA championships.
No Russian national team will be able to participate in an FIA competition.
The Russian drivers are authorized to fly under certain conditions.
No Russian driver will be able to participate in an FIA competition unless they switch to a FIA neutral banner and accept the values of peace and political neutrality.
No allusion or reference to the colors of Russia.
No Russian or Belarusian symbols, flags or anthems can be used during an international competition. Any reference to colors on a car or team is prohibited.
To note finally, the Russian commissioners or representatives of the FIA have been temporarily suspended.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem specifies that these measures are taken in the interest of the sport and peace, and in solidarity with Leonid Kostyuchenko, the President of the Ukrainian Automobile Federation.
