Video: The new pedal-mounted camera is causing a sensation in F1
During the Free Practice sessions, Formula 1 showcased the footage from a new onboard camera, installed beneath the pedals of Norris' McLaren. Synchronized with the onboard camera, these images immerse us even more into the perspective of a Formula 1 driver.
The video caused a sensation this Friday on social media and even among Formula 1 commentators. Julien Fébreau and Jacques Villeneuve on Canal+ praised the merits of this new onboard camera. However, this is not the first time it has been done in F1. Nevertheless, the technical achievement is impressive.
AlphaTauri was the first team to install a micro camera in a Formula 1 cockpit pedal. It was with Pierre Gasly during winter testing a few months ago. However, this Friday, Formula 1 unveiled an onboard camera, this time streamed live and simultaneously with the conventional onboard camera footage.
The idea? Being able to appreciate the subtle work of Formula 1 drivers contrary to what one might have thought. The video, inside Lando Norris’ cockpit (McLaren), clearly shows the smoothness with which the pedals move, especially the accelerator pedal. The “travel” – that is, the distance between the minimum and maximum points of the pedal – is quite high in the footage. This allows for more precision in the power given to acceleration and probably better management of tire temperature and risks associated with loss of grip.
These past weeks, F1 has innovated with a camera embedded in the driver’s helmet as well. This brings some visual novelty and a wow effect for the viewers.
