Rankings after Hungary: rarely has there been such a large gap between a leader and its runner-up
In the drivers' standings, the gap widens even more between the leader and his runner-up. The same scenario unfolds in the constructors' championship. Red Bull and Verstappen continue to dominate after their 8th victory in 2022 out of 13 races.
Max Verstappen surprised the paddock by winning this race in Hungary on Sunday, starting from 10th position. Helped by his new engine, the reigning world champion is gaining an almost insurmountable advantage in the fight for the 2022 title.
80 points at the break ahead of the second place.
Verstappen now has an 80-point lead in the championship over Leclerc with 9 races remaining. With a 7-point difference between first and second, if Leclerc were to finish first in all the remaining Grand Prix races, he would only recover 63 points from Verstappen. Therefore, in addition to winning all the races, it will be necessary to rely on Verstappen’s retirement.
Perez is closing in on Leclerc with just 5 points now, but it’s behind where the gap is narrowing the most. With a new podium, Hamilton and Russell are closing in on their championship rivals. The top 6 is pulling away significantly from the rest of the 14 cars.
A championship without competition for Red Bull as a constructor.
In the constructor’s championship, Red Bull has a nearly 100-point lead over Ferrari. Mercedes is closing in on Ferrari for the second place, being only 30 points behind.
Thanks to the points scored by Ocon and Alonso today, compared to only one car in the points for McLaren, the gap doesn’t change and the French team remains 4 points ahead of McLaren at the break.
