Hamilton receives a warning after his retirement at Spa
The seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton had a shortened and complicated Belgian Grand Prix after just a few turns. Refusing to appear at the medical center, he is sanctioned by the FIA.
Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso got into a fight at the start of the Belgian Grand Prix this Sunday. While Alonso was on the inside, the Mercedes driver closed the door prematurely on the Alpine, causing both cars’ wheels to make contact and literally sending Hamilton flying in the air.
If in the accident, the drivers didn’t collide with each other and the single-seaters were able to keep running, Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes had a mechanical problem a few kilometers further, causing the English driver to retire.
Mandatory medical visit after a serious accident.
The FIA has a very simple procedure. According to the G-force readings from the accelerometers placed in the drivers’ earpieces, the doctor is required to examine the driver.
« If after an accident, the medical light is illuminated in the pilot’s cockpit, the driver must report to the medical center on their own, without delay. » specifies the sporting regulations.
However, Hamilton did not follow the procedure, wasting time wandering on foot around the Spa circuit instead of returning to the garage.
For this rule violation, Lewis Hamilton received a warning as no penalty is provided. The FIA has cautioned the drivers that if this were to happen again, sanctions could be implemented.
