The new DRS zone that starts in turn 14 does not pose any problem

There are some new additions to the Zandvoort circuit this weekend, but one highly anticipated test was the new DRS zone that now starts at the beginning of the last corner. The successful test should allow for this solution to be kept for Sunday's race.

The new DRS zone that starts in turn 14 does not pose any problem

The FIA has introduced an earlier DRS zone for Friday’s free practice sessions. This is the second and final DRS zone on the Zandvoort circuit. Located at the exit of the last corner, at the beginning of sector 14, it allows the drivers to open their rear wing even when the F1 wheels are turned. Skeptical at first, the drivers wanted to try it out before making a judgment.

The drivers were able to complete many laps on the dry track on Friday, and the opening of the DRS from turn 14 onwards went smoothly for the cars, with much better grip in 2022.

Fernando Alonso reacted to this DRS opening at the end of the turn, saying on Canal+: “It’s good, it’s not as difficult as we imagined during the drivers’ briefing. We manage to be stable and it should be able to continue for the rest of the weekend.”

A DRS zone that starts earlier is an overtaking zone with more potential at the end of the main straight, resulting in more action on the track. The solution has not been modified yet and is expected to be used for the remainder of the weekend.

Since DRS can be used in qualifying, it will be up to the drivers to optimize the opening of their rear wing in order to take advantage of the highest top speed.
