Standings after Hungary: Verstappen mid-season champion, Mercedes extends lead over Aston Martin
As the F1 season has just reached its midpoint, with 11 out of 22 races completed, Max Verstappen is currently leading the drivers' championship and is well ahead of his teammate. On the team side, while Red Bull is dominating, Mercedes, the runner-up, is widening the gap with Aston Martin.
At the mid-season, the teams and drivers have just finished 11 Grand Prix races. While Max Verstappen and Red Bull are clearly dominating the championship, the situation behind them is still very unpredictable.
Driver standings after Hungary
In the world drivers’ championship, the standings remain unchanged with Max Verstappen now leading his closest rival, Sergio Perez, by 110 points.
Fernando Alonso is still third in the standings, but Lewis Hamilton is closing in on the Aston Martin driver, now with only a 6-point difference. Carlos Sainz loses his fifth place to George Russell. With a new podium finish, Lando Norris made a leap in the standings and is now eighth. He is still 20 points behind Charles Leclerc. The French drivers are in tenth (Ocon) and twelfth (Gasly) place.
Constructors standings after Hungary
In the constructors’ standings, Red Bull is dominating more than ever. Behind them, their competitors are dwindling race after race. McLaren, in good form, is indeed taking points from Aston Martin and Mercedes in the recent races and with 28 points scored by the English team today.
However, it is still Mercedes who holds second place among the constructors. The German team is ahead of Aston Martin, which has been less successful lately. Ferrari is closing in on Aston Martin, trailing by just 17 points, and now has a lead of “only” 80 points over McLaren. At this pace, the McLaren team could quickly climb back into the top 4.
Alpine, with a new zero score, remains in sixth place among the constructors, now 40 points behind McLaren. The situation five races ago was quite different. Alpine seemed firmly anchored in fifth place. Things change very quickly in Formula 1, so the second half of the season will be very interesting to follow.
