The AlphaTauri drivers are changing the gearbox
The two drivers of the Italian team will have a third gearbox this season. They will not receive a penalty.
There were few changes for this first practice session in Singapore. Often, teams bring new mechanical parts for their drivers at each Grand Prix. And Singapore is no exception to the rule.
For this 15th race of the season, only AlphaTauri came with new components. The Italian team installed a new gearbox in both drivers’ cars. Therefore, Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda have each received a third component this season.
They stay within the quota set by the FIA regulations, which state that each year, a driver can only use four gearbox units. Beyond this limit, they receive a five-place grid penalty.
The AlphaTauri drivers therefore have some room to complete this exercise in 2023, unless a major accident damages the mechanics of the cars.
