The Alpine Academy drivers are taking advantage of their break in the Formula 2 season to prepare for Formula 1. They are currently engaged with Alpine at the Hungaroring to complete several laps behind the wheel of a F1 car that is more than two years old, in compliance with the regulations.
Formula 1 teams are not allowed to use too recent single-seaters in order to prevent them from gathering coherent data. Therefore, Martins and Doohan drove an Alpine A521, the latest car from the old technical regulations, which had notably allowed Ocon to win the race on the Hungarian circuit.
Victor Martins is currently 5th in the F2 championship in his first season, 7 points behind his Alpine academy teammate, Jack Doohan, who is in 6th place. The Australian is in his second season of F2 and has won two races this season compared to one for Victor Martins.
