Toyota’s team principal, Tadashi Yamashina, revealed that he had to fight hard to keep his team in Formula 1 this season.
The Japanese automotive giant posted its first operating loss in December 2008, just weeks after Honda’s withdrawal.
Subsequently, Toyota, like the majority of other teams, quickly confirmed its presence in the sport, but Yamashina admitted that a sale had been seriously considered.
« I have pointed out more than once in the executive council meeting that there was no way to fix things, that we should withdraw, even with a drastic reduction in costs, » he told the Japanese newspaper Daily Yomiuri.
« Of course, our negative business results have cast doubt on our survival. »
Moreover, he stated that the commitment of key partners like Panasonic has been essential in keeping Toyota in F1.
« I was extremely happy that Panasonic decided to renew its contract with us, even though the company also had financial difficulties. They understood the importance of what we do and chose not to penalize us further, » continued Yamashina.
He also remains convinced that Formula 1 is a good showcase for Toyota.
« We have been participating in the F1 championship for the past seven years, which has helped to energize our company and increase the sales of our products. »
The team leader is convinced that Toyota will make great strides forward this season. The car has performed well in winter testing so far.
« We must win. After the last test day on Thursday, I’m sure we have the potential to win a Grand Prix race. Our team is much better than last year’s, » concluded the Japanese participant.
