Saturday: Alonso still does better than Piquet for Renault

Renault took part today in the fourth qualifying session of the 2009 World Championship. Fernando Alonso and Nelson Piquet qualified in 7th and 15th position.

The Brazilian is struggling to achieve the performances that his team, led by Flavio Briatore, is asking of him. To the point that Romain Grosjean, the third driver, is becoming increasingly active in the pits. This hasn’t gone unnoticed by the cameras. Starting from the 8th row, it’s hard to see Piquet scoring any points.

What is probably not the case for his teammate, Fernando Alonso. The latter, with more fuel at the start than in Shanghai, will attempt to bounce back in the standings.

Fernando Alonso – 13th and 7th:

« Once again, the qualifying sessions were very tight. It becomes difficult and stressful in the cockpit, but I imagine it’s very interesting for the spectators! We haven’t brought many updates to the car since China, but the team has worked hard every night to give me a competitive machine today. The qualifying went more or less as I expected, and my place on the grid is in line with my expectations. Tomorrow, we must do everything to score points, get into the top 5 or 6, or even do better. »

Nelson Piquet – 6th and 15th:

« I pushed a little too hard to get into Q3. I had four cars around me, there wasn’t much else to do but push a bit more and take some risks. It didn’t pay off. I hope to have a trouble-free start tomorrow and a good strategy. I need to score points; that’s what’s most important. »

Pat Symonds – Executive Director:

Track conditions: We experienced extremely hot conditions today, with 38°C in the ambient air and the asphalt reaching 50°C. These conditions were a real test for the cars and the tires.

Performance: « Our performance today was mixed. Fernando [Alonso]’s qualifying position reflects well the level of competitiveness we currently have. Unfortunately, Nelson [Piquet] made a mistake during his most crucial lap in Q2. I don’t think he’s really showing what he’s capable of. »

Predictions for the race: « The race will be difficult. The wind has already caused problems and even stronger winds are expected tomorrow. It will be important to pay attention to the tires. But I am confident. We can definitely have a good race and score points. »
