A little less than two hours before the Bahrain Grand Prix, the meteorologists on site are keeping the possibility of a sandstorm or very strong winds in the desert surrounding Sakhir in mind.
The ambient temperature is around thirty degrees, but the wind is forecasted to be 15 km/h in the middle of the afternoon. From 22 km/h, it’s enough for the sand to start lifting.
Winter testing was disrupted by sand-laden winds, which pose problems not only for the drivers’ visibility but, more importantly, because the medical helicopter cannot take off.
Martin Whitaker, the circuit director, reassures: « This issue has been resolved and new equipment has been installed so that the helicopter can fly over the sand. »
