It is clear that Toyota missed its race. After locking out the front row in qualifying, neither Jarno Trulli nor Timo Glock were able to fight for the top spot due to a poor race strategy. The reason being, both drivers had a long second stint with the hardest tires. A mistake, because it was the Super-Softs that should have been used today.
However, 8 points are added to the standings as Trulli still climbs to the 3rd step of the podium and Glock finishes 7th. The Toyota team remains 3rd in the constructors’ championship, one point behind Red Bull.
Jarno Trulli – 3rd:
« I am a bit disappointed to be honest because we could have clinched Toyota’s first victory this weekend. But it was a tough race. I was slightly slower in the first corner and Timo [Glock] took advantage to get ahead of me. Then, we had a very long second stint. It was really a tough fight with the other cars and finally Sébastien [Vettel] got the better of me. After that, I had the softest tires. I was faster but there was no way to overtake him. However, I must thank the engineers and mechanics who did a very good job because the podium wasn’t far. »
Timo Glock – 7th:
« It was a difficult race. I made a promising start and was surprised to get ahead of Jarno [Trulli]. Then, we were among the first to pit. But when I went out on hard tires, I don’t know how many seconds I lost, but in the first two laps, the grip really let me down. I couldn’t warm my tires as I wanted, and my race pretty much ended with that second stint. It’s clear that the Super-Softs were the best today. At the end, I was tracking Kimi but there was no chance to overtake him. »
Tadashi Yamashina – Team Principal:
« We expected a better result today, but I am happy with the third place and I would like to thank Jarno [Trulli] for his efforts. Timo [Glock] struggled to have stability with his tires. He lost a lot of ground but brought two points home. This is our third podium of the year, I would like to thank everyone involved, both here in Bahrain and at the factory, not forgetting our sponsors. We must now aim for the top step of the podium starting from Barcelona. »
